While kitchen renovations are a lot of fun, they’re also a significant investment. Most of the time, when you’ve done your kitchen over, it’s going to be that way for quite a while: the majority of homeowners only change the kitchen every 16 years or so, according to a recent survey done by Houzz. With that in mind, choosing the right colors for your kitchen can become a daunting challenge. What would you like to live with for a decade and a half?

Over the years we’ve been helping Maryland’s homeowners upgrade their kitchens, we’ve worked with some powerful personalities who have been thrilled with strong colors, including vibrant reds, yellows, and oranges, taking the starring role in their new kitchen. In many instances, those colors were featured in wall treatments, lighting and to some degree, appliances, while cabinetry and countertops were chosen in more neutral shades, including blonde woods, stainless steel, and granite or natural stone.

More often, we see homeowners opting for a slightly more subdued palette. Nationwide, top color choices for kitchen walls are white, beige, and increasingly, a soft gray. Choosing a neutral color for the walls does give the homeowner more latitude when it comes to choosing cabinetry and countertops. Trendy painted and stained cabinetry works well with these colors, as does an entire range of countertop options.

It’s important to keep your plans for home ownership in mind when choosing your kitchen colors. If you’re going to be at your current address for decades and you love the idea of a brilliantly orange kitchen, rock on. However, if you know your career or other commitments means you’ll be pulling up stakes after a few years, you may want to commit to a kitchen that’s less bold: it can have a real impact on your eventual selling price.
